Black holes have a powerful gravitational pull, due to its gargantuan mass, which allows them to snatch anything within their reach*. Light, matter, and time all can be pulled into a black hole. Around the rim of this gashes in space-time, time is stretched like taffy, towards the center of the hole. Consequently, if you were to circumnavigate a black hole in a friend's alien spaceship at a distance where one is not sucked in but still affected by the grasps of the black hole, you would be instilled in the stretched time. Returning to Earth after this journey, one would find that hundreds, if not thousands of years had past on the home planet, while you have only aged 10 years.
*The event horizon is the definite threshold of a black hole's gravitational pull where matter and light can not turn back. |
